ITRM extends congratulations to Sam Reader who has recently completed and passed his Network Cable Installer Level 3 Apprenticeship. We sat down with Sam to discuss his experience undertaking an apprenticeship, here’s what he had to say...

What made you want to follow the apprenticeship route?

I wanted to become an apprentice because I wanted to earn and learn at the same time and so an apprenticeship was the best option for me to achieve this.

What made you want to pursue a career in network cabling?

At the start and when I left school, I wasn’t sure about what I wanted to do. I came across network cabling online and after researching decided it sounded interesting. Now nearly two years later, I have learnt a lot and am pleased that I am still as interested as I was at the start!

What made you choose ITRM as your place of work?

ITRM is full of amazing people who make you feel welcome as soon as you start. The office is full of great and supportive people who make days better for everyone. This was clear when I was researching where to work, and it pushed me to apply.

What did you find the most challenging about your apprenticeship?

I felt the courses that I had to attend and complete at college were very challenging, but I just had to put some hard work and dedication in to remain focused so I could pass the specific course I was on.

What aspect did you find the most enjoyable about your apprenticeship?

I found picking up and learning new things each day the most enjoyable as this would make me better at my job and help me gain confidence.

How has ITRM and the Network Cabling team supported you throughout your apprenticeship?

The cabling team that I work with has helped me massively. They have taught me mostly everything I know, and they are where I learnt all my skills from. Without them, I wouldn't know anywhere near as much as I know now.

What career goals and aspirations do you have now that you have completed your apprenticeship?

Now that I have completed my apprenticeship, I want to gain the confidence to start doing a lot more jobs and tasks by myself and independently figuring out the best and most efficient way for me to complete the job.

What advice would you give to people just starting their apprenticeship journey?

Take the time to research and make sure it is definitely in a company and role you really want because it is a long journey and a tough challenge that requires commitment.
