Travelling down from Newcastle Lydia Barnett searched for valuable work experience in the IT industry.

What made you attend work experience at ITRM?

The reason I chose to attend ITRM for work experience is because I have a deep interest in IT, business and how a business works. Luckily I have connections to ITRM through family and friends and reached out this way. I wanted to do a work experience that coordinated with my interests and ideas for my future career and ITRM was perfect.

What have you learnt throughout your time here?

I spent four days at ITRM where I was shown and guided through most of the departments that make up the company.

On my first day, I was with HR where I learnt how they keep not only customers happy but also employees. Afterwards, I was welcomed by the marketing team where I was challenged with the creation of a cybersecurity post.

During my second day, I was involved with the support desk where I got to see the behind-the-scenes of how calls work and ticketing but also how important soft skills are in that sector.

On my third day, I was taught about business operations and how they deal with contracts and billing where they also work closely with consultancy; both departments gave me an outlook on what their everyday work looks like and how they use different platforms to assist them along the way. Lastly, I was with finance and was giving an understanding of how they deal with their finances and much more.

Finally, on my last day, I worked with sales and was able to see a sales induction, how they work with new businesses and their tier system. I then was walked through project management; the different projects they have, and the way they keep clients on board with what they plan to do and the timetable for the projects.

Overall I have learnt a lot during my short time at ITRM, this experience has given me an insight into how a business works and how all the different departments do very contrasting things but all work so closely together to get everything done and keep the business moving smoothly.

What has been your favourite part of the work experience?

I enjoyed working with all the employees at ITRM they are all extremely knowledgeable, kind and welcoming people. It was great to see how they worked as a team although all of them are very busy people, they still care for each other and make the environment more enjoyable (than it already is) to be in. They treated me with great care and kindness, it was lovely to meet them and spend time with them during my time here.

I also enjoyed learning new things that I wouldn't necessarily have been taught in school, giving me a broader understanding of more relevant subjects that go hand in hand with my own interests.

What have you found the most challenging from the work experience?

The most challenging thing for me during my work experience was understanding the terminology used as some words and abbreviations I had never heard of before but with the help from the staff, I soon understood what they meant and was able to continue active listening. I also found it quite challenging to build up the courage to speak with certain staff I hadn't been assigned to but after doing so with the help of their kindness I was able to do so without hesitation.

What are your future goals and aspirations?

My future goals and aspirations are to continue with school to sixth form and then university where I will be able to attain the qualifications I need to go into a good job where I can continuously work my way up and improve; after hopefully having done so I will be able to start my own business.
