What does “cloud” mean? What can it do for me?
These are two of the most commonly asked questions of cloud technology that we come across on a day to day basis. Cloud is a buzz word that has arisen from the depths of the technology mire and as a result has caused a frenzy of excitement and high levels of confusion in equal measures. Even the experts are losing sight of what it means, and so continue the futile debates over what is and isn’t cloud.
So, to simplify the matter somewhat, “Cloud” (in the modern sense of the word) is a group of technologies that are hosted outside of your core IT infrastructure. Most commonly, it includes services such as:
- Hosted E-mail
- Hosted E-mail Filtering
- Hosted Web Content Filtering
- Hosted Backup
- Hosted Disaster Recovery
- Website/Application Hosting
- Infrastructure Hosting
- Hosted Telephony
- Hosted Data Storage
A common theme in the above list is “Hosting” or “Hosted”. The term Cloud essentially represents all of these hosted services (and others not mentioned above) and is a modern spin on an otherwise long standing concept.
Our Head of Business Operations, Lewis Maslin, commented...
"the fact is, ITRM have been providing cloud services for years. We've chosen not to rush and join the countless numbers of other providers in pushing everything cloud. We know exactly what is right for our customers, and we will only recommend cloud services where they are appropriate, instead of cashing in to make a fast buck. Cloud isn't going to go away, but we believe that a hybrid of traditional and cloud technologies will provide the biggest benefit and this is an area in which we excel".
